Reefsleep: a night under the stars on the Great Barrier Reef
Price is in AUD
There are places you visit, and places you simply stay with. Most people see the Great Barrier Reef in a single, sun-filled day before the boat turns for home. Reefsleep asks a gentler question: what if you didn't leave? What if you stayed on as the day visitors drift away, watched the sky turn gold over the water, and fell asleep to the hush of the outer reef?
Reefsleep is an overnight experience at Reefworld, a pontoon moored at Hardy Reef on the outer Great Barrier Reef, reserved for a limited number of overnight guests. It is one of the most unusual and peaceful ways we know to experience one of the world's great natural wonders, and it slots beautifully into a longer Whitsundays holiday.
A day on the outer reef
Your journey begins with a scenic cruise through the Whitsundays, departing from Port of Airlie, Daydream Island or Hamilton Island depending on where you are staying. Once you arrive at Reefworld, the day is yours to shape. Slip into the water for a guided snorkel safari, with all your equipment provided, or stay dry and discover the coral gardens from a semi-submarine tour or the underwater observatory. Lunch, morning and afternoon tea are all taken care of, so there is nothing to think about except where to look next.
For those who want a little more, optional extras include scuba diving and a scenic helicopter flight over the reef, and we are always happy to help you decide which are worth adding.
When the sun goes down
This is where Reefsleep becomes something truly special. As the afternoon light softens, you settle in with a drink in hand to watch the sun set over the reef. Dinner is prepared by a chef and served under the open sky, with beer, wine and soft drinks included throughout your stay.
Then comes the moment that makes this experience so memorable. You retire to your Reefbed, a double for two or a single for solo travellers, and sleep beneath the stars, far from city lights and surrounded by the quiet of the Great Barrier Reef after dark. For celebrating couples, there are thoughtful touches available too, from champagne and chocolates to a birthday cake or an underwater dinner.
A slow morning, and the cruise home
You wake to a still, peaceful morning on the reef, with more time to swim, snorkel or simply sit with a coffee and take it all in before the afternoon cruise home through the Whitsunday Islands. It is an unhurried pace that experienced travellers tend to appreciate, and one that lingers long after you are home.
